About Informatica

Informatica is one of the longest-standing names in enterprise data integration. Its Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) bundles ETL and ELT pipelines, data ingestion and replication, application and API integration, data quality, a data catalog, governance and master data management, with an AI assistant called CLAIRE across the services. Large companies use it to pull data out of ERP, CRM and mainframe systems into warehouses and lakes, and to keep customer and product records consistent across systems. Informatica is now owned by Salesforce, and the site presents it as Informatica from Salesforce. Pricing is consumption based: customers buy Informatica Processing Units (IPUs) that can be spent across the cloud services, with volume discounts on larger commitments. A 30-day free trial of the cloud platform is available. It is aimed at enterprises with complex, regulated data estates; for a startup that just needs SaaS data in a warehouse, lighter tools are cheaper and quicker to set up.

Best for: Large enterprises that need integration, data quality and master data management on one contract.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Very broad suite: integration, quality, catalog, governance and MDM
  • One pool of IPUs can be spent across many cloud services
  • 300+ connectors, including older enterprise systems

Why people leave

  • IPU consumption pricing is hard to estimate before you buy
  • Steep learning curve and usually needs specialists or consultants
  • Overkill for small teams loading a few SaaS sources
