About Airbyte

Airbyte moves data from APIs, databases and files into warehouses, lakes and other destinations. Its core engine and connectors are open source and free to run on your own servers, while Airbyte also sells a managed cloud with hosting, upgrades and support, plus hybrid and on-premises plans for companies whose data can't leave their environment. A low-code Connector Builder and a Python CDK make it practical to add sources that no vendor supports, which is a common reason teams choose it over closed services. Newer releases also expose data to AI agents through an MCP server. It is aimed at data engineers comfortable running infrastructure, though the cloud plans remove most of that work. Cloud pricing is credit-based with a monthly starting tier and a no-card trial. Self-hosting is free but means you own upgrades, scaling and connector failures.

Best for: Data engineers who want open-source ELT they can self-host and extend with custom connectors.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Core engine is free to self-host with no row-based fees
  • Connector Builder and CDK make custom sources straightforward
  • Same pipelines can move between self-hosted and managed cloud

Why people leave

  • Self-hosting means you handle upgrades, scaling and failed syncs
  • Community connectors vary in quality and maintenance
  • SSO and faster sync schedules are limited to higher paid plans
