About Langflow

Langflow is a low-code tool for building AI agents and retrieval-augmented apps on a visual canvas. Each block is a Python component: models, prompts, vector stores, document loaders, tools and agents. You connect them, test the flow in a built-in playground, then serve it as an API endpoint or expose it as an MCP server that other AI clients can call. It isn't tied to one model vendor and works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, Mistral, Bedrock and many vector databases. Developers can open any component and edit its Python code, which gives more control than closed no-code builders. Langflow is MIT licensed and free to self-host. It installs with pip or uv, runs in Docker, and there's a Langflow Desktop app. The project also points to a free hosted cloud for deployment. It suits developers and technical teams who want to prototype agents visually but keep the option to drop into code. Non-technical users may find it less approachable than hosted chatbot builders.

Best for: Developers prototyping AI agents and RAG flows visually who want Python-level control.

Pros and cons

What works

  • MIT licensed and free to self-host
  • Every component is editable Python code
  • Can expose flows as MCP servers and connect to external MCP tools
  • Works with many LLM providers and vector stores

Why people leave

  • Assumes some understanding of LLM concepts like embeddings and vector stores
  • Self-hosted production setups need your own scaling and monitoring
  • No built-in channel integrations like WhatsApp or live-agent handoff
